UNDERSTANDING INTEREST

How Is Credit Card Interest Calculated?

Credit card interest is generally calculated by applying the monthly interest rate to your unpaid balance carried over from month to month. In addition, 18% GST applies to all finance charges and interest accrued.

Monthly Interest = Balance × (Annual Interest Rate / 12 / 100)

In addition, GST is charged on the monthly accrued interest amount.

Total Monthly Interest Cost = Monthly Interest + GST on Interest

Finally, payments are applied to reduce the total balance including accrued interest and taxes.

Principal Paid = Monthly Payment − Monthly Interest − GST on Interest

Example

Suppose you carry an outstanding balance of ₹50,000 at an annual interest rate of 36% (3% per month), paying a custom payment of ₹5,000 monthly vs minimum ₹2,500.

Outstanding Balance ₹50,000
Annual Interest Rate 36% (3%/mo)
Minimum Monthly Payment ₹2,500
Custom Monthly Payment ₹5,000
Estimated Interest Saved Significant Savings

Why Paying Extra Saves Money

Paying more than the minimum monthly payment reduces the principal balance faster. This reduces future interest accruals and GST, shortening the total repayment time significantly.

Repayment Advantage
Faster Payoff

Increasing monthly payment reduces total interest and debt duration.
