Credit card EMI is generally calculated by applying the eligible interest rate to a qualifying transaction. However, many card offers have conditions such as monthly interest rates, processing fees, minimum transaction amounts, or tenure restrictions.
If GST applies on interest, the actual monthly outflow increases beyond the base EMI.
Finally, applicable processing fees and taxes are added to estimate the total extra payable.
Suppose you convert an outstanding balance of ₹50,000 into a 12-month EMI at a 1.5% monthly interest rate with a ₹500 processing fee.
Converting transactions to EMI distributes payments over time, but added interest charges, processing fees, and 18% GST increase the total amount you pay back over the tenure.
